What Really Happened in the McDonald’s Coffee Burn Lawsuit?

August 31, 2026 in Elite Lawyer

personal injury lawyerThe McDonald’s coffee lawsuit has become one of the most famous personal injury cases in American history. Most people know a simple version of the story: A woman spilled hot coffee on herself, sued McDonald’s, and won millions of dollars.

As is often the case with notorious events, that version leaves out nearly everything that made the case important. The truth is much more interesting – and it’s important to know if you have been injured and need a local personal injury lawyer.

The True Story of the McDonald’s Hot Coffee Lawsuit

Stella Liebeck, who was 79 years old at the time, bought a cup of coffee from McDonalds and accidentally spilled it in her lap as she was parked. Liebeck suffered severe third-degree burns over six percent of her body, including her thighs and groin. She spent eight days in the hospital and underwent treatment that included skin grafting. Her injuries resulted in substantial pain, scars, and a long recovery.

Evidence at trial also showed that McDonald’s knew its coffee had caused serious burns before Liebeck was injured. McDonald’s policy required coffee to be served between 180 and 190 degrees – nearly boiling. There were many previous complaints about the heat but McDonald’s did not change the policy.

Why Did the Jury Find McDonald’s Responsible in the Stella Liebeck Coffee Burn Case?

Any liquid as hot as McDonald’s served its coffee can cause third-degree burns in mere seconds. The jury also heard evidence that McDonald’s had received hundreds of reports involving customers who had been burned by its coffee before Liebeck’s accident.

A company that learns its product has repeatedly caused serious injuries may need to change the product or take other steps to make it less dangerous. The jury concluded that McDonald’s bore most of the responsibility for Liebeck’s injuries.

Did Stella Liebeck Really Get $2.7 Million Just for a Hot Coffee Spill?

The jury initially awarded Liebeck $2.7 million in punitive damages in addition to her compensatory damages. Punitive damages aren’t the same as compensation for medical bills, lost income or pain. They are intended to punish especially wrongful conduct and discourage similar behavior.

The $2.7 million figure became the number repeated in headlines and jokes about the lawsuit. However, Liebeck never received a $2.7 million check.

The trial judge reduced the punitive damages to $480,000. The parties later reached a confidential settlement before the litigation ended, so the final amount Liebeck received was never publicly disclosed.

Can You Sue McDonald’s or Another Large Company for an Injury?

Liebeck v. McDonald’s became a symbol in arguments about whether Americans file too many lawsuits. But stripped of the jokes, the case illustrates basic ideas from serious personal injury claims every day.

Companies can be held responsible when dangerous products cause preventable injuries. Previous complaints can help show that a company already knew about a safety problem but didn’t do anything – or didn’t do enough – to fix it.

Someone who has suffered a severe burn, defective-product injury, or a slip-and-fall accident at McDonald’s or anywhere else shouldn’t assume that a claim would be a silly idea. Personal injury lawsuits are an important way of holding large companies accountable for bad things they do.
